I would like to point out that even though we have a relatively large set of possible energy solutions, there are currently none that have become cost effective and cost effectiveness is the key to getting widespread use and acceptance. The reason that the task before us is so monumental is that the current price of energy is so artificially high. If the market were free of cartels and high taxes (around 20% of $2.75/ gallon of gas) the current price would be under $1.00 per gallon. While we will have a very difficult time getting either of those two hindrances removed, the price will come only down as the oil cartels start selling less. As we all know that will only occur once other fuels are being introduced. The cartels will continue to gouge us for our dependence as long as there is no alternative. The price of oil will be just low enough to make any other source of energy less efficient, regardless of what the new energy type will be.

Having said that, we must get off our collective butts and make the decision as to which alternative to support based on not only current costs but on what likelihood there may be to improve upon the technology in the future. Our goal cannot be to merely drive down the cost of fossil fuels; our goal must be to eliminate them. The cartels will only do this every 20 years once we have let our guard down and have become complacent.....again.

Being energy independent does not mean that we will be satisfied with a mere reduction from the current 70% imported oil to 50%. We must improve our energy output to the point where there is no gap between our production and our usage.

The only way we can make the right choice now, is to be correctly informed and not make decisions based on how much a lobbyist is going to put in someone's reelection coffers (which is how a surprisingly large number of these types of decisions get made under our current system). The costs will drop as our need of imported oil drops. Our truest weak spot in this plan is holding our resolve during the times that the cartels need to sell oil and have it closer to a free market price and we capitulate to their control again because it is cheap to do so. Resolve must be continuous and steadfast and our goal must be to rid ourselves of the scourge of funding groups sworn to our destruction because we have not paid any attention to our past mistakes and our congress being more worried about their campaign funds than the well being of our country.

This is a non-partisan event being hosted by Greg Knytych of the Laconia City Council.
It will be held at the Lakes Region Community College located at 379 Belmont Road (Route 106 at the Belmont town line), Laconia, NH 03246 from 1 - 7 PM on Saturday.
